Praise for Almost Midnight:"The characters are well drawn, the Maine landscape is vividly portrayed, and Bowditch pursues his passion to protect the innocent and bring evil doers to justice regardless personal cost." ―Associated Press“Few writers can summon a place as well as Paul Doiron depicts rural Maine…he has Raymond Chandler’s touch for the tiny detail that makes a place central to a story…a rare treat.” ―The Globe and Mail"Doiron writes with eloquence, authority, and passion about Maine’s wilderness and its creatures...an emotionally satisfying, adrenaline-fueled sprint. Fans of C.J. Box will find much to admire." ―Publishers Weekly“Doiron has brilliantly developed his protagonist…The cherry on top is Doiron’s ability to continue mixing smart plots with vibrant descriptions that help transport readers into the Maine wilderness, where they’ll stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Mike, feeling every ounce of heart-thumping suspense along the way.” ―Ryan Steck, The Real Book Spy"Doiron...[ramps] up the tension slowly until the story reaches can't-put-it-down velocity." ―Library Journal“Fans of outdoors procedurals, like those by William Kent Krueger or C. J. Box, will be delighted to get to know the consistently strong Mike Bowditch series, now in its tenth installment.” ―Booklist"[A]ction-packed and compelling...once again, Doiron paints a picture of a Maine that...will feel authentic to those who've grown up in similar places with similar histories." ―Bangor Daily NewsPraise for Stay Hidden:"Doiron captures the stark beauty of his setting." ―New York Times Book Review“Outstanding…Doiron balances nuanced characterizations and intelligent plotting perfectly.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review) "The extraordinary sense of place makes this Doiron's strongest novel yet." ―Booklist (starred review)"Maine author Paul Doiron provides readers yet another sharp twist." ―Portland Press HeraldA native of Maine, bestselling author PAUL DOIRON attended Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in English. The Poacher’s Son, the first book in the Mike Bowditch series, won the Barry award, the Strand award for best first novel, and has been nominated for the Edgar, Anthony, and Macavity awards in the same category. He is a Registered Maine Guide specializing in fly fishing and lives on a trout stream in coastal Maine with his wife, Kristen Lindquist.

In this thrilling entry in Edgar Award finalist Paul Doiron's bestselling series, a deadly attack on one of Maine's last wild wolves leads Game Warden Mike Bowditch to an even bigger criminal conspiracy.

While on vacation, Warden Investigator Mike Bowditch receives a strange summons from Billy Cronk, one of his oldest friends and a man he had to reluctantly put behind bars for murder. Billy wants him to investigate a new female prison guard with a mysterious past, and Mike feels honor-bound to help his friend. But when the guard becomes the victim in a brutal attack at the prison, he realizes there may be a darker cover-up at play―and that Billy and his family might be at risk.

Then Mike receives a second call for help, this time from a distant mountain valley where Shadow, a wolf-hybrid he once cared for, has been found shot by an arrow and clinging to life. He searches for the identity of the bowman, but his investigation is blocked at every turn by the increasingly hostile community. And when Billy’s wife and children are threatened, Mike finds himself tested like never before. How can he possibly keep the family safe when he has enemies of his own on his trail?

Torn between loyalties, Mike Bowditch must respond in the only way he knows how: by bending every law and breaking every rule to keep his loved ones safe and the true predators at bay.

Fast-Paced, Excellent Writing, Strong Sense of Place The good news is that Paul Doiron is a master of his craft, and this series is still going strong. He has no weakness in his writing skills so his characters are well developed, his plots are reasonably complex, and his settings are so richly detailed that you have to look up to see that you have not left your home. After some scenes, you feel like you need to scrape the mud off of your shoes. This book is the tenth book featuring Maine Warden Mike Bowditch. Mike Bowditch’s Maine is not the Maine that I saw as a tourist. While it still has a wild beauty, it also has serious problems related to poverty, drugs, alcohol, mental illness, weapons, corruption, and politics. (If you read Archer Mayor’s Joe Gunther books that are set in Vermont, you will recognize the same contrast between a beautiful tourist destination and the much less beautiful reality for the full time residents.) Paul Doiron writes so well, that you will never feel the same way about Maine. That is the bad news. This series is one with a lot of continuing characters whose lives have changed over the years, so it is a series that is best read in order. The story begins with Mike’s friend Cronk requesting him to come see him in prison. Cronk is one of Mike’s oldest friends, but Mike’s testimony put him in prison. After a brutal murder and shooting in prison, the plot really takes off. To tell more, would ruin the suspense. The pacing is fast, and at times the tension level is high. Paul Doiron’s books are ones that we pre-order because of the complex plots, well-drawn characters, and strong sense of place much like the mysteries by Cay Rademacher (set in Provence), Martin Walker (set in the Dordogne), Jean-Luc Bannalec (set in Brittany), Ann Cleeves (her series set in the Shetland islands and her Vera Stanhope series set in Northumberland), Mark Pryor (set in Paris), Cara Black (set in Paris), Jane Harper (set in Australia), Elly Griffiths (set in England), Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling set in London), and Louise Penny (set in Canada). Although most of those books involve considerably less mud. All of these books are a cut above the genre. We will be waiting to read the next episode in Mike’s life.Another Thrilling Mike Bowditch saga! Another great book by Paul Doiron in the Mike Bowditch series! I highly recommend all of Paul’s books on Game Warden Mike Bowditch. They are nearly impossible to put down! Get them all and read them...I have read all of them twice!A good change of reading material😁 I really enjoyed this whole series, but have to admit I was a tad disappointed in the end off the last book. Maybe next year it'll turn out to my liking?? I was very happy for the Cronk's, but saddened for what was in Mike's heart. I most normally read love\mystery books though.
